It's from Bee Basics by Lori Holt for Riley Blake. Don't any of you go getting any ideas...I'm gonna buy it all up because it is so very, very cute!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In between pics I'll let you know what I've been up to this last year...I retired from teaching last April, had a surgery, became a pharmacy technician, worked at that for the last 8 months, then decided to change it up again and restart my longarm quilting business. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back to the fabric--check out the cute lines on text on this print!! I didn't bother to fussy cut the strips because they easily all had cute little sayings on each strip without any effort from me.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimSe19bPhyphenhyphenapzSxUWxG4t6SgST1HZ7uQusWJOp_FTet8mWU-IwZZEO1mD9JW2J4jtgNjeJ5lo7Bhc2pKGD7GE0P8bIXOFHQ1N48MmoyZ9IoA5UoGKbtHEtVbi2n2n8rC6nkn45AULZUuXq/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1338" data-original-width="1207" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimSe19bPhyphenhyphenapzSxUWxG4t6SgST1HZ7uQusWJOp_FTet8mWU-IwZZEO1mD9JW2J4jtgNjeJ5lo7Bhc2pKGD7GE0P8bIXOFHQ1N48MmoyZ9IoA5UoGKbtHEtVbi2n2n8rC6nkn45AULZUuXq/s400/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back again to longarming--this time I'm adding an Intelliquilter (computerized quilting software) to my longarm machine to "up my game" professionally. My plan is to give reasonable notice at my pharmacy job, move my studio downstairs, and have the system installed in early summer. With any luck, I should have my system up and running by the end of June. <a href="http://logcabinquiltery.com/">Log Cabin Quiltery</a> will be back in business!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a pic of the selvedge on this wonderful fabric...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyhow, I'll let you know how the studio move works out. For sure I'll take some before and after pics during all the stages. This should be super fun!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy Quilting!</div>

So here is a post about a project I started last week!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW8Yxde3NB-AWl9s4rlD4AK5Ffc6mu7hRO9gqQevrGb3FlXuFhaRFNST4zVuBLNn3_v4ZGGc2RiY-a-nsICY4B4OtvK4LnVYcgrtrjmYeMA2m8pW4sBzwBDrokvl6ujEuPuXR7lAVoJBxB/s1600/pmcover3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="700" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW8Yxde3NB-AWl9s4rlD4AK5Ffc6mu7hRO9gqQevrGb3FlXuFhaRFNST4zVuBLNn3_v4ZGGc2RiY-a-nsICY4B4OtvK4LnVYcgrtrjmYeMA2m8pW4sBzwBDrokvl6ujEuPuXR7lAVoJBxB/s400/pmcover3.jpg" width="280" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of my favorite patterns to make is my Baby Butterflies. These modern butterflies are so adorable--and they can be made from 2-1/2" strips, so they are perfect for jelly rolls or scraps. I decided that I needed to make a small, rainbow, scrappy butterfly quilt for my dog Buddy (and me, of course). It was to be about the size of a baby quilt...lol...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCKYdhZNE1-1OJ6R_Vvb6hkWQgyNLGYMHi0tdFzct6WLeuNsgBzIjPe0PFiXoF1hTrRzQuWA0w3CmQAG9C_m_atqmpH3GhOC_qXtwSJeTm9Ki4QzF6LIqTDEQdQ80r246wF_AccDwWnnvH/s1600/IMG_1674.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCKYdhZNE1-1OJ6R_Vvb6hkWQgyNLGYMHi0tdFzct6WLeuNsgBzIjPe0PFiXoF1hTrRzQuWA0w3CmQAG9C_m_atqmpH3GhOC_qXtwSJeTm9Ki4QzF6LIqTDEQdQ80r246wF_AccDwWnnvH/s640/IMG_1674.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So about a week ago I started grabbing fabric from my stash and cutting strips, then subcutting to make the wings. This is the pile that I'm sewing from right now. I needed about 80 pairs of wings and I ended up with over 200 different sets!! Crazy....</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnqo-pHFng1Cq8lGrAJu4lD-9DOUl7MU9NYLPWTCubi5HdPx3ipYpeh-07-AQ1p0iHfXV0kERAZ0vBUy-QyWTNvGB9Fmyr8MA2sunHSvIt8qQ8kGzus4jgZFc9vCQlp2btUiuw08MtUPec/s1600/IMG_1684.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnqo-pHFng1Cq8lGrAJu4lD-9DOUl7MU9NYLPWTCubi5HdPx3ipYpeh-07-AQ1p0iHfXV0kERAZ0vBUy-QyWTNvGB9Fmyr8MA2sunHSvIt8qQ8kGzus4jgZFc9vCQlp2btUiuw08MtUPec/s640/IMG_1684.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I was at it, I cut extra wings...because...why not? I'm sure this is going to be super-duper and maybe I'll want to make another one, right?? So here are an extra 500+ pairs of wings...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQAofEvVmUxcuYU3m5m9XYGPfm-ksrx_ApC7lAS0sq3gs5zcwrp5c1ejovPQ2_c548I53nNwccHhVt80z1HIX9ordyz8DRQFRhPHKl0Tvgl8otH45CjAkTPac8o-l6Rdqhim-QyAqJCeM0/s1600/IMG_1686.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQAofEvVmUxcuYU3m5m9XYGPfm-ksrx_ApC7lAS0sq3gs5zcwrp5c1ejovPQ2_c548I53nNwccHhVt80z1HIX9ordyz8DRQFRhPHKl0Tvgl8otH45CjAkTPac8o-l6Rdqhim-QyAqJCeM0/s640/IMG_1686.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And since I was already cutting something scrappy, I figured I might as well cut a bunch of 2-1/2" strips, just because...and that became it's own project!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finally got to sewing yesterday, with Rebecca's help, and I like where this is going!! I'll post more on the print for center of the butterflies when I can get a good pic. And more on where I've been the last year...</div>

I was actually done teaching at the end of April because I had a surgery scheduled for early May. That took a while to recover from...but now I'm doing well and I'm ready to move on to something new....and I retired from teaching, don't forget that part!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi55MR0oGz0zhPs2zCwxQUCBN4zRH5ksEDxyTx6-biVzhFJXPZEybIDtBvNcA9s1nEeJcviTVhNIjZriCdL8m-5r5i7LzeSpTJqofGH3ipt4sDPH6CEERHbJNMS13lronIBHAuPeg1re_1U/s1600/DSCN2011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi55MR0oGz0zhPs2zCwxQUCBN4zRH5ksEDxyTx6-biVzhFJXPZEybIDtBvNcA9s1nEeJcviTVhNIjZriCdL8m-5r5i7LzeSpTJqofGH3ipt4sDPH6CEERHbJNMS13lronIBHAuPeg1re_1U/s400/DSCN2011.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So during my recovery, I spent a month studying for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam. It is a national exam which certifies that pharmacy techs have some basic skills and drug knowledge. Most people go to school or work in a pharmacy for a while prior to taking it, but not me. After studying all day, every day, for a month, I took it and passed. It was really a personal goal--to show that I was still capable of learning new things. Twenty-seven years of teaching can turn your mind to mush...<br />
<br />
Now I need to find a job at a pharmacy and get 500 hours of work experience to complete my Pharmacy Tech license for the state of Nevada. Wish me luck!!<br />
<br />
ps. There should be more time available to quilt now that my studying is complete. In fact, I'm going to go longarm a baby quilt today!! It has only been loaded on the machine since Christmas break...LOL. Happy Quilting!Vic H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00731457735125526759noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1369652289250863914.post-90010502738539396182017-05-03T18:06:00.000-07:002017-05-03T18:06:05.153-07:00Rainbow pineapple...and remodeling plans!I jumped on the pineapple block bandwagon and made a cute little mini quilt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjviSknCgO25YPiEuq-D8GaYPOa7iOcNe81nCeLg-3-AFECi5n2P-PtQ6ZveR1bG2OB47Res_BwAE9H27OeW-c-BlQeVWV0eAY26dpyA2CneiujJ6Is1VVFDYqsZyzdDBZ-wa5aY_rXpOob/s1600/DSCN1984.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjviSknCgO25YPiEuq-D8GaYPOa7iOcNe81nCeLg-3-AFECi5n2P-PtQ6ZveR1bG2OB47Res_BwAE9H27OeW-c-BlQeVWV0eAY26dpyA2CneiujJ6Is1VVFDYqsZyzdDBZ-wa5aY_rXpOob/s640/DSCN1984.JPG" width="420" /></a></div>
<br />
The rainbow squares finish at 1.5" x 1.5" so the whole thing only measures about 9" x 15"-- the perfect size for a wall of mini-quilts I intend to have someday! I've been slowly remodeling my son's "mancave" in anticipation of his college departure in a year and half. We had it tiled over Spring Break while he was away in New York on a band trip. Why let the room go to waste when it could become another sewing room?? Yes, I already have two others upstairs, <i>but this one would be downstairs</i>....so it's different. ;-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCm_sd9iJs-pFVn_ArYb7dscn4_KXZF4QCRPwzqAalgroQpzSNnvBUrBUuzmgZoGF3I2V69wr3lKlBjTAJDtRusHRt-Q-69fRost6Cmh4H3VXtwTl-WXy9aeL2JHTfBnfAP0Eho5qLEHqc/s1600/DSCN1996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCm_sd9iJs-pFVn_ArYb7dscn4_KXZF4QCRPwzqAalgroQpzSNnvBUrBUuzmgZoGF3I2V69wr3lKlBjTAJDtRusHRt-Q-69fRost6Cmh4H3VXtwTl-WXy9aeL2JHTfBnfAP0Eho5qLEHqc/s640/DSCN1996.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have a paint color picked out (kind of a duck egg blue/aqua/dinner mint color), and plans to chalk paint the corner hutch and credenza....and I must have a wall of mini-quilts! All of his instruments will be gone, and his couch, and all of his stuff....and most sadly, him. I love him so much and wish he would stay and go to UNLV, but his musical dreams will likely take him from Las Vegas. So very sad...but on the flip side, I'm taking this mancave and making an awesome sewing space!!!<br />
<br />
The floors look like wood but are porcelain plank tiles--much cooler in Las Vegas during the summer--and easier to clean up after a marathon sewing day!! We removed the carpet and he didn't even notice a change. Plus, it is easier for him to roll around his tuba and sousaphone when he needs to practice. He also taught himself the piano this year, and the bass guitar, and wants to tackle an acoustic guitar this summer. ps...The blue tape is painter's tape applied near a step down into the cave so he gets used to noticing the drop down. Because the tile in the cave matches the tile in the foyer, it is easy to stumble if you don't expect the step....<br />
<br />
Not a very quilt-related post, but important just the same. I recently purchased about a yard and half of a Riley Blake Modern Minis panel print fabric. The panel was a series of 4" squares punctuated with cute little sayings. I quickly cut the panel apart into squares and matched up two colored squares with one text square. I cut the colored squares in half diagonally and then attached them to the top/bottom and left/right sides of the text square. I was able to trim them up to 5.5" x 5.5" squares.<br />

Lots and lots of blocks were going to become a dog quilt, but then I thought they needed sashing....<br />

These little sayings are so adorable....By this point, I realized the dog can't read the sayings and this quilt was too good/girly for him....<br />

Remember phones with cords? And wondering who was on the other end of the line? And taking care with every picture you take because film is expensive and you had to pay for every single picture to be developed?? LOL...<br />

I inserted some 1" finished sashing between the blocks, added some setting triangles and voila! A baby quilt was made....and I know that babies can't read, but their parents can read, so the awesome text won't be lost on them...<br />

Anyhow, I'm going to order some coordinating backing fabric and get this thing quilted up and put on Etsy. But I think there are about 8 other quilts in the queue waiting for my lazy longarmer (me!) to get them quilted!!<br />

This little block soon became a favorite and now I'm addicted to making them from my huge scrap pile...The squares are cut 2" and finish at 1.5". The whole block is 6.5" unfinished!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKt37HzL4G2KqLUgCXV_j59a7AWnXVuAYIkE_YUZvXFsGWC8F4JXgaW0Va_rmZhP_Btotg8CQu_FJbLyFBgdaT2QdTTlSAO_rHUONZ_3t4DdGnkQBITHGMaGZJ_YUxs4Ru604Y-VKCjk7G/s1600/DSCN1961.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="560" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKt37HzL4G2KqLUgCXV_j59a7AWnXVuAYIkE_YUZvXFsGWC8F4JXgaW0Va_rmZhP_Btotg8CQu_FJbLyFBgdaT2QdTTlSAO_rHUONZ_3t4DdGnkQBITHGMaGZJ_YUxs4Ru604Y-VKCjk7G/s640/DSCN1961.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So I kept on making more and more blocks and I'm at this stage. It might stop here, as a 24" x 24" mini quilt...but who knows?? I still keep making more blocks so I could go a bit larger or maybe just turn them into mini-mini quilts or mug rugs...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSqlLcg-iH0jrZ8YcTVHkxwsu6P5oJgi8x30HDKto0eLytyQwMbfGMoDNW4pvaHmpxVaEWBEOszawa2b0tjbxhmLQ3tcgXeLbs4DHMJorV5dhO3iAK-eArLEThGlGFWHIApO9V15gxcdci/s1600/DSCN1959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="588" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSqlLcg-iH0jrZ8YcTVHkxwsu6P5oJgi8x30HDKto0eLytyQwMbfGMoDNW4pvaHmpxVaEWBEOszawa2b0tjbxhmLQ3tcgXeLbs4DHMJorV5dhO3iAK-eArLEThGlGFWHIApO9V15gxcdci/s640/DSCN1959.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyhow, this is what has been going on lately at my house. Today I need to quilt up my green shamrock mini quilt and get it bound. Maybe you'll see that one tomorrow!!<br />

<br />
During an online search for a shamrock pattern, I found <a href="http://www.quiltingworks.com/howto/shamrock-block.htm">this shamrock tutorial</a> from QuiltingWorks.com, but it was for a 12.5" x 12.5" block. I thought the basic idea was great and decided to scale it down to a 6.5" x 6.5" unfinished block. I would love to ask permission from QuiltingWorks, but I can't find a way to contact them and it seemed to be a free tutorial with no credit given to the original designer. I've seen other blocks like it from other sources, so I doubt it is a truly unique design, but QuiltingWorks is the place I saw it first. A big thanks to them for the inspiration!<br />
<br />
So after debating about it, I decided to give them credit for the design, scale it down, and write a tutorial with a bit less wasted fabric. Here it goes....a mostly picture tutorial....<br />
<br />
The block: 6.5" x 6.5" unfinished<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3HTLWw3Lw_fYII_a1btSTgwPhLV8ApTgVgcOJpNijpR7nWGFIvYOhWxpNCU8IITvR6aV99LEKdKYCeVvhfv_MUU8FXEI7VfK-u2ASz2dYZ3DqJLY7y96UAfHfitwQ5dIPOsZgw0uD0bkU/s1600/shamrock2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3HTLWw3Lw_fYII_a1btSTgwPhLV8ApTgVgcOJpNijpR7nWGFIvYOhWxpNCU8IITvR6aV99LEKdKYCeVvhfv_MUU8FXEI7VfK-u2ASz2dYZ3DqJLY7y96UAfHfitwQ5dIPOsZgw0uD0bkU/s320/shamrock2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<b><u>Cut the following pieces:</u></b><br />
<br />
(12) - 2" x 2" green squares<br />
(1) - 1" x 4.5" green stem rectangle<br />
(5) - 2" x 2" white background squares<br />
(1) - 4.5" x 4.5" white background square<br />
<br />
Arrange the pieces for the shamrock block as shown below. Pull out the three inside squares that will remain 2" x 2" and the stem and background square--set them aside. The remaining nine 2" x 2" squares will have one corner cut off in the next step<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguJSHwPO3WKXq8llfVxRJ9AjTvpS8cWM_u-0tEeLQ8XwXbx7ChGiH4ufEJ-FZe65ygos-WHk9ZrpuZe6JQ0xrwlBogWAXQ8BmYwsh0k0fzwjPnwl0FgRa1mbMulbiqWtmwg6GLay5xFJ_C/s1600/layout2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguJSHwPO3WKXq8llfVxRJ9AjTvpS8cWM_u-0tEeLQ8XwXbx7ChGiH4ufEJ-FZe65ygos-WHk9ZrpuZe6JQ0xrwlBogWAXQ8BmYwsh0k0fzwjPnwl0FgRa1mbMulbiqWtmwg6GLay5xFJ_C/s640/layout2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b><u>How to make the template to cut the corners:</u></b><br />
<br />
From a piece of paper, cut a 1" x 1" square and cut it in half diagonally. Tape one half of the paper square to the bottom of a clear acrylic ruler and use this as a guide to cut off one corner from each of the nine green squares. To save time, stack several squares on top of one another and make the cut...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbMrUeiHcvMt-6iLzxbnctlOvPUGG5npVNunVUU0hlbzKJA2YOYlT2QRhJu88Wz-UHxi3GhwNBAXqK174HOU03rLHo8pQFykcapX3VOTvxtqvQdtW_EGEsiUXC9IBT4vX_MF5RcwX800Rc/s1600/cutting+corner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbMrUeiHcvMt-6iLzxbnctlOvPUGG5npVNunVUU0hlbzKJA2YOYlT2QRhJu88Wz-UHxi3GhwNBAXqK174HOU03rLHo8pQFykcapX3VOTvxtqvQdtW_EGEsiUXC9IBT4vX_MF5RcwX800Rc/s640/cutting+corner.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Next, cut the five 2" x 2" background squares in half diagonally and sew them to the corners of the cut green squares.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh1JZED0bpt2hFz04WRNTgW-EPgeuoLve9-ud2PMEQbtWd5qyUWR2W-96NwpOvnuGgmZeviIhr0canN_xZQ0fm8M37kW97bPMCvGn0j-3glPVjdGAT7TcJcDXV1ZJ9xOvim1UQcBhAfdpL/s1600/add+corner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh1JZED0bpt2hFz04WRNTgW-EPgeuoLve9-ud2PMEQbtWd5qyUWR2W-96NwpOvnuGgmZeviIhr0canN_xZQ0fm8M37kW97bPMCvGn0j-3glPVjdGAT7TcJcDXV1ZJ9xOvim1UQcBhAfdpL/s640/add+corner.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is another view of how to center the white triangular background piece on the cut green square...be sure that the two pieces are centered on one another (the white triangle tips on the left and right sides should be the same size).<br />

Press the seams open and trim the squares to 2" x 2".<br />

<br />
To make the stem unit, take the 4.5" x 4.5" background square and make a cut 3" from the left of the bottom right corner, and 3" up from the bottom right corner. Place that triangular piece off to the side for now. Rotate the remaining piece so that the cut you just made is horizontal and lined up along a grid line on your cutting mat--also, make sure that the top tip of this piece is lined up on a vertical grid line on the cutting mat. Make a vertical cut up to the corner (cutting the piece into two mirror images). Use the grid on the cutting mat to help ensure that this cut is perpendicular to the first cut.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5dA2tROBRL-HRQiMYkgPi-mwqFr7HnM05FuzjnpUHKdh9Y7QAkefrTZ31_s2oKnGhvcKtlVCfdKMCRcLZktaNrAERIT1-ylDbec-jJz-eQgh4R9xunduXnXLKrJRINyaI4FnJko88FS8e/s1600/stem+with+numbers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5dA2tROBRL-HRQiMYkgPi-mwqFr7HnM05FuzjnpUHKdh9Y7QAkefrTZ31_s2oKnGhvcKtlVCfdKMCRcLZktaNrAERIT1-ylDbec-jJz-eQgh4R9xunduXnXLKrJRINyaI4FnJko88FS8e/s640/stem+with+numbers.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Sew the 1" x 4.5" green stem piece in between the two halves of the background square. Press the seams open to reduce the bulk. If necessary, trim the edge of the pieced unit so you have a straight edge prior to attaching the corner triangle. Center the tip of the triangle in the center of the stem, align the bottom edges of the two pieces, and sew the triangle to the pieced unit. Press the seams open.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD2wFATOw-3TQiaL9kfZNnzJ7JDD_HPtPP-XKVC5Q2PZgutadjLIKbXRVAlLJJ2wgT7ogmDIDQ4JDyw65TfsDlZq6inGTDq5ttv4S_RFO4jGXGZEgjq_24D2P1bGjJRJM-VAbhqn1rLZxr/s1600/insert+stem.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD2wFATOw-3TQiaL9kfZNnzJ7JDD_HPtPP-XKVC5Q2PZgutadjLIKbXRVAlLJJ2wgT7ogmDIDQ4JDyw65TfsDlZq6inGTDq5ttv4S_RFO4jGXGZEgjq_24D2P1bGjJRJM-VAbhqn1rLZxr/s640/insert+stem.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, trim the stem unit to 3.5" x 3.5". Center the 45 degree line of a square ruler up through the middle of the stem. Trim the top and right side of the unit. Rotate it 180 degrees and trim the other two sides to square it up to 3.5" x 3.5"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEplx-js-dCAuf7ykJgfBy5IRELHevxd8bL7Ll2PrgNgXjJTO4Ei0hf7d3d3ndH6BWni2dg3-KiaWZQHXq9NSbnwEpnuo2Hh_nV_dMgE8tg_3sIIdWaqruWlZHrLhI3QhAIWyvCwTTEPvF/s1600/stem+finish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEplx-js-dCAuf7ykJgfBy5IRELHevxd8bL7Ll2PrgNgXjJTO4Ei0hf7d3d3ndH6BWni2dg3-KiaWZQHXq9NSbnwEpnuo2Hh_nV_dMgE8tg_3sIIdWaqruWlZHrLhI3QhAIWyvCwTTEPvF/s640/stem+finish.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, layout the shamrock pieces into rows and sew them together. Sew the rows to one another and attach the stem unit to the bottom two shamrock rows. Press all seams open to reduce bulk. The finished shamrock block should be 6.5" x 6.5".<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made several mug rugs from these little blocks for friends and family. One thing I might do differently than most is that I use single fold binding for mug rugs, mini-quilts and wall hangings. I cut the binding 1.5" wide-<a href="http://www.shecanquilt.ca/2015/01/single-fold-binding-tutorial.html">-here is a tutorial for single fold binding</a>, if you need it. In my opinion, double fold binding should be used on quilts that will get a lot of wear and tear. If a quilted item won't be handled very often, why waste the fabric on a double fold binding that only creates bulk around the edge of a small quilt?? Just my two cents...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

It will be a mini-quilt when it is finished, measuring 22" x 22". There will be 5 x 5 "x"s...25 total.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1lVrDUwKTh4_mu1ggXSXs108dU-2IOCcSK85ZdPgh8S1UCscE4JTJArTQYuYnH-lWCqRoBox_UxIiOiVBBQr-MKoGZsmgfhGdIIKecjefV5ByvrQDpIVT2E50GFOTCLZ37KEJ-f0jnXRG/s1600/DSCN1877.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1lVrDUwKTh4_mu1ggXSXs108dU-2IOCcSK85ZdPgh8S1UCscE4JTJArTQYuYnH-lWCqRoBox_UxIiOiVBBQr-MKoGZsmgfhGdIIKecjefV5ByvrQDpIVT2E50GFOTCLZ37KEJ-f0jnXRG/s640/DSCN1877.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The fabrics used are a bit of #love, a little Miss Scarlett and some Natural Kona cotton. I love EPP, but this pattern seems a bit harder than the diamonds and jewels I've used in the past. Oh well, my goal is to finish it by Valentine's Day. We'll see how that goes....<br />
<br />
I did finish a couple of dog placemats for Buddy. I found some scraps when I was cleaning out my sewing room and decided to make use of them...then I decided to do some simple crosshatching, which turned into a ridiculous amount of crosshatching for a dog item...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqDRCqyqyFCgkFkGmk58_cR1_F58O3P2ifLtWPccfy4x-SdyRjMZLVvxojSyiVLeobLES9tOUS6gOXOnP4FpbH4wzEUFDZFWG3ClQUJN_-7i4lD1sd4FlNL0POluNxiLiNqRVfk3XQwA3G/s1600/DSCN1872.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqDRCqyqyFCgkFkGmk58_cR1_F58O3P2ifLtWPccfy4x-SdyRjMZLVvxojSyiVLeobLES9tOUS6gOXOnP4FpbH4wzEUFDZFWG3ClQUJN_-7i4lD1sd4FlNL0POluNxiLiNqRVfk3XQwA3G/s640/DSCN1872.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And though I LOVE my Juki, it doesn't come with a guide that can be attached to the walking foot for evenly spacing the crosshatching. So I made a rigged guide from an expired insurance card to try to keep my lines evenly spaced....very hinky! But an improvement from my last one made from cardstock....this one is actually laminated!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjneBiOU2xJpzlrmIUep-l8852OGQju-aMzgGR2FagPNfSYGgSdF7HR_YPDJbFkFi0FMeQs92BrU7UqCcHC0cvmM4d9Rel3OOJMlqVF_VZc45jnt2d_nHhg9F0zEcb89w9N6GjeUXZakKlr/s1600/DSCN1893.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjneBiOU2xJpzlrmIUep-l8852OGQju-aMzgGR2FagPNfSYGgSdF7HR_YPDJbFkFi0FMeQs92BrU7UqCcHC0cvmM4d9Rel3OOJMlqVF_VZc45jnt2d_nHhg9F0zEcb89w9N6GjeUXZakKlr/s400/DSCN1893.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Juki--hear me now!! I love your walking foot and perfect stitches, but I'd like an adjustable guide that attaches to the foot to help me with perfect crosshatching!! Is that too much to ask??</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR2aM_jCyURUxVBzO-L3cX_yyVYj7K_Pw2o0XKYEq8thFD7Ss03GlUwvD2dzLdyjRyBq1eEa6KlHYgUtuseQSFK1bhvoIt-eWnGpDbXQkXMKszulNPjAbZFKGRz2c0gW_zTziTl4Ug6jaC/s1600/DSCN1871.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR2aM_jCyURUxVBzO-L3cX_yyVYj7K_Pw2o0XKYEq8thFD7Ss03GlUwvD2dzLdyjRyBq1eEa6KlHYgUtuseQSFK1bhvoIt-eWnGpDbXQkXMKszulNPjAbZFKGRz2c0gW_zTziTl4Ug6jaC/s640/DSCN1871.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But the stitches are perfect and Buddy is already enjoying his new mat. Isn't that all that matters??<br />
<br />
I'm getting closer to retirement...less than four months away! I just did swirls...nothing fancy...<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I still have a pile of tops that need to be quilted, so you might see more quilting in the coming months. There really isn't a reason that I let them pile up...laziness?? Or maybe it's the damn Netflix?? lol...</div>

Two for me and Rebecca... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXrSfeaLlR-NazMkVR5FbUZ1SqIJ0d4JF88bDjTiUM75M-30EbwsczV2NWfNK08EhYeLhTUZlmXpHc2oqHQkH_3_mQ0d4F5ujQXehrwXE836LAKGEAxRm2oLG2s09T7UdxorLou8jWO8c/s1600/DSCN1855.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXrSfeaLlR-NazMkVR5FbUZ1SqIJ0d4JF88bDjTiUM75M-30EbwsczV2NWfNK08EhYeLhTUZlmXpHc2oqHQkH_3_mQ0d4F5ujQXehrwXE836LAKGEAxRm2oLG2s09T7UdxorLou8jWO8c/s400/DSCN1855.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And a single Valentine dog for my happily single friend Denise...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5e6taQPCQZ3Zq3q-IJLiNWQMF-_XjpUzdhRm9piRKRtWO3_gFU_smLgjEOWW5tzuFeztIDPzrYkWDp_5_cRLNWdpbLvAyINyKV9ShZrDvw-68PnISk5CBaGEOcxjBESZP1ozEIfPLUYwv/s1600/DSCN1854.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="352" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5e6taQPCQZ3Zq3q-IJLiNWQMF-_XjpUzdhRm9piRKRtWO3_gFU_smLgjEOWW5tzuFeztIDPzrYkWDp_5_cRLNWdpbLvAyINyKV9ShZrDvw-68PnISk5CBaGEOcxjBESZP1ozEIfPLUYwv/s400/DSCN1854.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I really do like making mug rugs...such a quick and easy project. To make binding these little things easier, I use a single-fold binding (1.5" strip). I found a tutorial on single-fold binding <a href="http://www.shecanquilt.ca/2015/01/single-fold-binding-tutorial.html">here at shecanquilt</a>. The only difference is I use a slightly bigger strip, but generally the method is the same. This keeps the binding from being so bulky on a small, light-use item like a mug rug, or mini quilt.<br />
<br />
Happy Quilting!<br />

After my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/170176337/extra-credit-scrappy-mini-log-cabin?ref=shop_home_active_9">Extra Credit</a> jelly roll log cabin pattern, I always meant to make another quilt block with little pieces--but from layer cake squares. I recently got inspired by these mug rugs that I use <i>every day</i> and basically ignored for years....lol. The corner piece finishes at 2" x 2" and the logs finished at 1" wide.<br />

After sketching a bit on some grid paper (every quilter's friend), I came up with this block. I'm calling it Bonus Points because the pieces are small and you deserve some Bonus Points for taking the time to assemble blocks with little pieces....LOL...teacher humor, get it?? 😊<br />

I came up with a simple method for making one quarter log cabin block from a layer cake square and a bit of background fabric. Once you add more layer cake squares, you get more variety in your blocks. My first go around, I made a rainbow version with 12 blocks. For this gradient method, I used two fabrics of each color. ** I did use small scale fabrics that almost read as solids.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz_LJuONFPade1puDMbon3l-2DL4zabcYeVM9QruC3uJDOAWwy5Bo9zPd8oDAQphNfY2HZKVPwF8WXcZBDaadD9OfzbC_CXcIthHrp8MK8fy6efT5yaTLYWi4J-ShUh6pMzXhH4Q72Owzg/s1600/DSCN1669.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="536" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz_LJuONFPade1puDMbon3l-2DL4zabcYeVM9QruC3uJDOAWwy5Bo9zPd8oDAQphNfY2HZKVPwF8WXcZBDaadD9OfzbC_CXcIthHrp8MK8fy6efT5yaTLYWi4J-ShUh6pMzXhH4Q72Owzg/s640/DSCN1669.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are going gradient, I'd recommend making blocks that are multiples of six (like 12, 18, 24, 30 or 36...etc). Here are a few suggested quilt sizes for gradient blocks... it is available in PDF form <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-VNSNdoXp6kZFFoREx2Wnd0ZW8/view?usp=sharing">here</a>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUE0g_3kx8U3segquAj3gsOd9CSRmIm6C6U2v9gUP4aukd9Cx7b_1OmnIZQBnORubFv0nX9PhbnjacahAWGzyZUnxF0CXl9bcIJ0w7MSdtiZvU3o0RsJWdFzbA_Uun94kvthGGQtUezkL9/s1600/BP+fabric+requirements.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="392" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUE0g_3kx8U3segquAj3gsOd9CSRmIm6C6U2v9gUP4aukd9Cx7b_1OmnIZQBnORubFv0nX9PhbnjacahAWGzyZUnxF0CXl9bcIJ0w7MSdtiZvU3o0RsJWdFzbA_Uun94kvthGGQtUezkL9/s640/BP+fabric+requirements.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<b><u>Block Assembly</u></b>: First, stack several layer cake squares on top of one another for faster cutting (I do six at a time). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA20ewZvD_MU6N6sQDTWQ937jf6MFuYIrTrN5Kktv8LvaBNC4e4PDZuJsDnedmmp7_HAhwV__Du2Yljy9EdfzVuQhyphenhyphenY1p9y9_pE2CEdwdgYU5kfnonsfh2QknqTCP1UVwb7tIL75oe0y9h/s1600/cutting+grid+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA20ewZvD_MU6N6sQDTWQ937jf6MFuYIrTrN5Kktv8LvaBNC4e4PDZuJsDnedmmp7_HAhwV__Du2Yljy9EdfzVuQhyphenhyphenY1p9y9_pE2CEdwdgYU5kfnonsfh2QknqTCP1UVwb7tIL75oe0y9h/s640/cutting+grid+3.jpg" width="580" /></a></div>
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
**Be sure not to make a cutting mistake--there is no room for error in the cutting ;-) Cut all the layer cake squares in this manner and stack your pieces by letter. There will be a 2.5" x 5" scrap of fabric leftover from each layer cake. In a later post, I'll show you how I pieced those scraps together and inserted them in the backing fabric for a little added cuteness...<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXcCkJGNKbxxp7ppPofRVy08L1PZc1q2JdBbsZ0MRQttB_0GTZoaHmQRdDRE9oO07EhSSzHiBv2cootibELp-Nu-S4C2nE2TocmroDFMEnIi4cp-lwwHZQb3JXjRY8YmjrTZQH75sxx71j/s1600/Lettered+Pieces.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXcCkJGNKbxxp7ppPofRVy08L1PZc1q2JdBbsZ0MRQttB_0GTZoaHmQRdDRE9oO07EhSSzHiBv2cootibELp-Nu-S4C2nE2TocmroDFMEnIi4cp-lwwHZQb3JXjRY8YmjrTZQH75sxx71j/s640/Lettered+Pieces.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The pieces are lettered in the order they will be sewn into the block. Start with piece "A" and add "B" to the right side. Press the seam toward the "B" piece and then add the "C" piece to the top. Press the seam toward the "C" piece, then add the "D" piece to the left....etc. I always pressed the seams of the logs toward the <i>outside </i>of the block.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3iXwmVlWavkfM6dCEtxUKdroR8JO857IgvOzTjxevtMeAVpMnjQV_xsxZZo7NEYzczvtPSI0_EqWEVBNHjY0Pr-V4tGO9W8wla6A3NJ8cFmMjuFeLDHik27d91TH0TfNcOGqLjC2MjNvL/s1600/Lettered+Assembly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="578" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3iXwmVlWavkfM6dCEtxUKdroR8JO857IgvOzTjxevtMeAVpMnjQV_xsxZZo7NEYzczvtPSI0_EqWEVBNHjY0Pr-V4tGO9W8wla6A3NJ8cFmMjuFeLDHik27d91TH0TfNcOGqLjC2MjNvL/s640/Lettered+Assembly.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Depending on your seams, your pieces might not fit perfectly. If you are using a scant 1/4" seam, everything should be spot on! But if your seams are slightly bigger or smaller, your pieces will be a bit smaller or bigger when you attach them to the block. Don't worry!<br />
<br />
<b><u>HINT:</u> </b>As you add the next log, be sure to line the edge up along the corner where all the logs are meeting (the upper right corner--the one opposite of the "A" piece). Don't worry about the jagged edge on the left side and bottom of the block--these will get squared up at the end of the process.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbXTM-P4RiQsLpHKvllJN8RnhK-WYnsXFAjcgBwHtymnDtwg9Ccw59gcN1Lim55MF5jQ20GyI_YNWhO02Y_9VflXDvYKtPZPW_rw1dvS01hQgETpk3D8nfcZpnSJoG-10Zrz0gvXUihgd-/s1600/add+piece.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="546" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbXTM-P4RiQsLpHKvllJN8RnhK-WYnsXFAjcgBwHtymnDtwg9Ccw59gcN1Lim55MF5jQ20GyI_YNWhO02Y_9VflXDvYKtPZPW_rw1dvS01hQgETpk3D8nfcZpnSJoG-10Zrz0gvXUihgd-/s640/add+piece.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
After all the logs are sewn together, it is time to attach the background pieces. <br />
<br />
You will need two 2.5" x 7.5" background rectangles for each block. From your background fabric, cut the required number of 2.5" x WOF strips and subcut into 2.5" x 7.5" pieces. Each strip should yield 5 rectangles. <br />
<br />
Sew one of the rectangles to the right side of the block and sew the other rectangle to one of the "L" 2.5" x 2.5" squares. At this point, I pressed the seams open. Also, I picked a "L" square that matched the color of the original "A" piece...but you can mix it up and put whichever "L" square you like in the corner...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPXlHTezVUofnANKrxpRma_ToA0SbVRfzXzC4NO_cRCTguTxM0AjblgPz8cKtCbK3b5YvBwR-cqm4sIMq8SU3YHBZq9ttGNLK5Kq9KO1LRXtQaS5wAdnpCZA3V2RcSoZtWYjtl0gpj_9pB/s1600/Edge+Assembly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="632" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPXlHTezVUofnANKrxpRma_ToA0SbVRfzXzC4NO_cRCTguTxM0AjblgPz8cKtCbK3b5YvBwR-cqm4sIMq8SU3YHBZq9ttGNLK5Kq9KO1LRXtQaS5wAdnpCZA3V2RcSoZtWYjtl0gpj_9pB/s640/Edge+Assembly.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For the final step, sew the top rectangle/"L" unit to the pieced block, aligning the seams of the "L" piece with the final log in the block. Sew these together and press the seams open.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOl0akkXSKbn3R0uJO-iDdEWa6McxDwTkXAyS3HY9jf1qWSALCmnDSSEcTtXULJ-eoN_EBy4DnmOrIbIpmKv6YYgyB13LYTtzdU2vbEfnRT1bGOvhkiVg4O3uFW2ZL1jNwCSeWwlLRi2aA/s1600/cornerstone+rainbow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="632" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOl0akkXSKbn3R0uJO-iDdEWa6McxDwTkXAyS3HY9jf1qWSALCmnDSSEcTtXULJ-eoN_EBy4DnmOrIbIpmKv6YYgyB13LYTtzdU2vbEfnRT1bGOvhkiVg4O3uFW2ZL1jNwCSeWwlLRi2aA/s640/cornerstone+rainbow.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, it is time to square up the blocks. Ideally, if your seam was a scant 1/4" inch, you should be able to square up to 9.5" x 9.5". If your seam is a little off, then you might need to square up a bit smaller or a bit bigger--no worries, the pattern is flexible. My Juki has a "wide" 1/4" seam so my blocks squared up to 9.25" x 9.25".<br />
<br />
I started squaring up in the corner with the "A" piece to keep as much of the logs as possible. Trim the top and right sides. Rotate the block 180 degrees and then trim the other two sides to your "square up" size.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggLPoFyApNFZPPWRtwX5Dg-61inI54kbc5xz9tq2yg2EwYiDPoThlZ8-PRnFjhGMrVrMTf5TOhbk9K4OJtS5ew_ANcf1q9An-4t-d7PmVIX3WyyhCdM2Iv_-3AZvqg0Zg9b93_MUUws46v/s1600/Block+trimming.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="596" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggLPoFyApNFZPPWRtwX5Dg-61inI54kbc5xz9tq2yg2EwYiDPoThlZ8-PRnFjhGMrVrMTf5TOhbk9K4OJtS5ew_ANcf1q9An-4t-d7PmVIX3WyyhCdM2Iv_-3AZvqg0Zg9b93_MUUws46v/s640/Block+trimming.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is the finished block.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsb4MHOaURaVAA3-rnaaCh7jDlI7abrAZ93fmOgMkQygKOSQa28BsECWBYUVFRIEPHPIXiMPGgDOKyiK5IQ8KTNvrKmAlCC6JZBotlbrSxDo5Cm3AgxIKLYFeeRjisRUevmjmuqoyxwwvp/s1600/DSCN1705.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="624" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsb4MHOaURaVAA3-rnaaCh7jDlI7abrAZ93fmOgMkQygKOSQa28BsECWBYUVFRIEPHPIXiMPGgDOKyiK5IQ8KTNvrKmAlCC6JZBotlbrSxDo5Cm3AgxIKLYFeeRjisRUevmjmuqoyxwwvp/s640/DSCN1705.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As for layouts, there are several possibilities...and more if you have more blocks! These are a few I came up with on the fly...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYJuuQL4282zEp5cUCbVUr5persRHT8kBhar6ChLtu3Dusg4D7UbZIo5t199t5KbGyP0GgTglStcC_f4AB3ngKsSDuUHAZRL2GFiUkfPLT5MR_zXP8XCyZ607elIM_r2aLtta-snU-l5a4/s1600/BP+Layouts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYJuuQL4282zEp5cUCbVUr5persRHT8kBhar6ChLtu3Dusg4D7UbZIo5t199t5KbGyP0GgTglStcC_f4AB3ngKsSDuUHAZRL2GFiUkfPLT5MR_zXP8XCyZ607elIM_r2aLtta-snU-l5a4/s640/BP+Layouts.jpg" width="490" /></a></div>
<br />
I hope I covered everything in this tutorial Watch for later posts as I try this in other colorways and larger sizes. Honestly, with the cutting taking so little time, and the piecing being so easy, a baby quilt can quickly come together in an afternoon. I love log cabin blocks and I hope that you have fun with this pattern.<br />
<br />
Please send me pics if you make a quilt from this tutorial, I'd love to see your quilts!! Enjoy...Happy Quilting!</div>

After watching it sit on my sewing table for a few months, I finally decided to make something practical with it...a zippered, vinyl front bag.<br />

<br />
I've made a few of these before and I'm thinking of modifying it to make it two-sided (and come from layer cake squares). We'll see if I can get it done....<br />
<br />
The rainbow quarter log cabin blocks I've been working on are coming along great. I'm to the "block assembly" stage and I have a few options. I used my "design floor" to test out some different patterns...<br />
<br />

<br />
There are quite a few different ways to arrange the blocks (and this is with only 12 blocks)! I'm leaning towards....well, you'll see!! Happy Quilting!Vic H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00731457735125526759noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1369652289250863914.post-90196233676163273002016-12-25T15:41:00.000-08:002016-12-26T13:06:41.645-08:00A New Idea...First of all, Happy Holidays to the five people who are following me ;-) LOL...I seriously need to post more frequently--I think I'd leave myself after so much neglect!!<br />
<br />
I made these rainbow mug rugs a few years ago (during my "I'm gonna be a mug rug mogul" phase)...and I use them every day. But they just sort of blended into the background until a friend's six year old son picked it up yesterday and told me how cool it was... and yes, he is right, it it pretty cool. I actually have two of them (he didn't see the second one because it was covered in my craft table mess)....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So after the kid left the house, I thought "This mug rug is too cool for me to put my coffee on...what am I thinking??" Then I thought "Maybe I could make a quilt like this"... using layer cake squares!! So I grabbed my graph paper and got to sketching...I think I got it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I needed some layer cake squares--so off to the stash I went. Here is what I pulled (took 3 hours due to the disaster that I jokingly call my "sewing room")... and an interestingly sad movie called "45 Years"...</div>

<br /></div>
I'm gonna work on this a keep you updated. If looks like it has possibilities, I'll write a little tutorial and show my sketches...<br />
<br />
On a side note, I'm doing a serious fabric destash (mostly of fabric that is OOP and I think other people might want a shot at making something from this stuff). I have some amazing fabric that I never got around to using and now I need to get rid of some stuff. Check out my<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LogCabinQuiltery?ref=hdr_shop_menu&section_id=15299483"> Etsy shop</a> destash section...maybe there is something you might like/want/need.... But what I did find in my stash is some cool stuff...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Tons of my favorites by Bonnie and Camille, Kate Spain, Deb Strain, Pam Kitty, Denyse Schmidt, Joel Dewberry, Tula Pink, Amy Butler, etc... All just waiting for some attention. In the future, you are gonna see a lot more scrap quilts coming from my stash and a lot less fabric being bought from the stores!! I'm not going to go crazy and keep track of yardage or anything, but let's just say the mail lady is going to forget my name!<br />
<br />
So that is my Merry Christmas/Happy Quilting post! Enjoy your day...we are off to a 24-hour bar and grill called "Henry's" here in Las Vegas for a Christmas Southwest Salad, Ryan will get a cheeseburger, and Rebecca is a wild card (hopefully she gets some crunchy fries for me to steal).<br />
<br />
See ya! And look, Dad, no curse words!!!<br />

I used Kona Ice Frappe for the background fabric...I've also decided to add some "alternate sizes" to my pattern. I'll upload them <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-VNSNdoXp6kMUV6SkxrdUNEbFk/view?usp=sharing">here</a> for anyone to download who already purchased the pattern. And I'll add in these fabric requirements to any future pattern downloads.<br />
<br />

<br />
This one is 6 blocks by 6 blocks and measures 51" x 51". I'm not sure what I'll use for backing fabric...I have a ton of vintage sheets, but I like cotton as well....hmmm....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And an up-close shot. I'm trying to get some bright pictures at the park and Rebecca isn't really appreciating holding the clothesline for me....lol...oh well!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Anyhow, I guess I'm going to write the alternate size fabric requirements right now...while catching up on some DVR'd shows with Ryan. Happy Quilting!Vic H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00731457735125526759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1369652289250863914.post-72022726942334684362016-12-10T14:55:00.000-08:002016-12-10T14:55:23.188-08:00Finished Tops....I've been meaning to get a couple of nice pics outside with these quilts...but time slips away and I fail to gather up some items for picture time. Today, however, I scoped out a place at the park to hang a clothes line and Rebecca helped me get some decent pics...<br />
<br />
First up, my EPP project made with April Rosenthal's Summerfest fabric and a few of my own scraps. I started it last June, if I recall, and finished it up last month...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And an up-close sexy shot...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHKG6ieBiOyV1dVsj6yfbxKLxgccNkndmiFVmvlk3zk-t6Kj80wuRUPfMM77ehG8GL0mlE2A9njgvmtvZj2oJDPZXEOqN8uV8DuykDM4WravkY2_jB1J4IcSKk-npj8qyy4cC8FMRi6YYV/s1600/DSCN1468.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHKG6ieBiOyV1dVsj6yfbxKLxgccNkndmiFVmvlk3zk-t6Kj80wuRUPfMM77ehG8GL0mlE2A9njgvmtvZj2oJDPZXEOqN8uV8DuykDM4WravkY2_jB1J4IcSKk-npj8qyy4cC8FMRi6YYV/s640/DSCN1468.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The other one I finished up was the "zero fucks" quilt top. I seriously need to quilt these up over Winter Break....It is a mini-quilt measuring 24" x 30" and is made entirely from thrifted men's shirts. Upcycled projects just make me happy!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Anyhow, I'll post up pics again when I get these quilted and some pics of my other projects. Turns out I have three other WIPs downstairs to finish. One is a new EPP project, so that is awesome!! Happy Quilting!Vic H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00731457735125526759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1369652289250863914.post-71102936907595827242016-11-27T10:22:00.002-08:002016-11-27T10:22:19.594-08:00An old favorite...On the heels of finishing my other EPP project (photos later), I pulled out my Kaffe EPP quilt the other day. I still need to add in the last four rows of stars...but here it is on the floor last night.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It seems like the last time this quilt top came out of the WIP box was January 2015--eeks, almost 2 years ago!! I took this pic in the backyard waaay back then...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
If only I could teach Buddy how to EPP ;-) This thing would be finished in no time!! You know, when I started this quilt I thought it would be a "once in a lifetime" quilt... I mean, who would <i>hand sew</i> a quilt together?? But it turns out that EPP is my favorite form of sewing now. I still use the machine, but I much prefer the slow process of English Paper Piecing any day. It's funny how things change, right? <br />
<br />
Happy Quilting!Vic H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00731457735125526759noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1369652289250863914.post-28989566668902645872016-11-24T08:00:00.000-08:002016-11-23T15:56:45.439-08:00Happy Thanksgiving!We are enjoying the week off here at my house...the school district gave all of us (teachers and students) the whole week off this year! This is the first time for this in the 40+ years I've worked/gone to school in Las Vegas. I got a chance to take some pics of my red and khaki Gypsy quilt on the porch today...<br />

<br />
I really like how this little quilt turned out. It only measures 36" x 48" and I plan on listing it in my Etsy shop this weekend. As I turned around to take another pic, Buddy joined in on the fun...<br />

He is a cocky little chihuahua who doesn't know any boundaries where quilts are concerned. We found him wandering on a major street here in LV about 7+ years ago. Buddy is super spoiled and the best thing to happen to our family. And the best part about him is that he never was a chewer...he never damaged anything in the house, or made messes or ruined anything. He loves to snuggle under quilts and has several of his own.<br />
<br />
On another note, I began yet another quilt project/pattern. Here is the fabric pull for the first attempt...It is a layer cake pattern so I cut layer cake squares (one for each block) and picked the yellow accent color from my stash. The purple solid might be for the setting triangles around the edges of the quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjELye2YjVHsb8cxEm5FSgapeA00alMpH7F5X7cUQX1F5_5KBX_Keym8PXIWEwninEqjt87ql3s6ZeepqOAfhKkOcuCOABI67Yy2LiFCnm-dY4CgkD3Ie3LMzIDMKXVKUjN46cgJ9AAMnJf/s1600/DSCN1428.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjELye2YjVHsb8cxEm5FSgapeA00alMpH7F5X7cUQX1F5_5KBX_Keym8PXIWEwninEqjt87ql3s6ZeepqOAfhKkOcuCOABI67Yy2LiFCnm-dY4CgkD3Ie3LMzIDMKXVKUjN46cgJ9AAMnJf/s640/DSCN1428.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also added a bright aqua accent color at the last minute. This is just a small test run of the pattern...13 blocks and the finished quilt should measure 42" x 42".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I made the first prototype back in February of 2016, another in June and the final one in September. Work got in the way and I dropped the ball at getting it finished...but here it is!! <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/493597325/gypsy-a-precut-friendly-quilt-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_1">Gypsy </a>is available in my Etsy shop...<br />

<br />
It can be made using layer cake squares or charm squares (or scraps!) and multiple sizes are available in the quilt pattern. The blocks come together quite easily--nothing too difficult. The cover quilt was made using some of my coveted Soul Blossom fabric...below is an up-close shot of the quilting. The panto is called Jessie's Swirls and I love the texture it gave the quilt.<br />

Today, after pressing some blocks I made yesterday, I realized I had more than enough to make the quilt!! Yeah... Here it is on the floor...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM12gF-hehKnaq5FJMvX6l49P8HPJzEmP_ya5tmvOTkGVZUiGMQgd6OnNxZ50AOtGHKO8iwwTw4mlJMR7qgxGb876axWIZAKJXdKbl5zvJWteNpOVZayC57YFI1WElhhWkZyzXjphVvEJa/s1600/DSCN1379.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM12gF-hehKnaq5FJMvX6l49P8HPJzEmP_ya5tmvOTkGVZUiGMQgd6OnNxZ50AOtGHKO8iwwTw4mlJMR7qgxGb876axWIZAKJXdKbl5zvJWteNpOVZayC57YFI1WElhhWkZyzXjphVvEJa/s640/DSCN1379.JPG" width="544" /></a></div>
<br />
It will only measure 24" x 30" when it is complete. The squares finish at 3" each and are made entirely from my thrifted plaid shirt collection!! This is quite the "upcycled" project. ;-)<br />
<br />
What does it say?? Well, it's a popular phrase used to describe the point when you just have to give up caring so much about what everyone else thinks and just do what works for you... Caution: There is a bad word involved--so if you are sensitive to cursing, don't look to closely or zoom in on the pic below. I'm only showing the pic so you can see how I planned out the layout of the mini-quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm going to get the rows pinned and start assembling this little gem of a quilt!! Happy Quilting!</div>
<br />Vic H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00731457735125526759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1369652289250863914.post-320065018617669902016-10-19T11:11:00.000-07:002016-10-19T11:12:12.960-07:00EPP Progress... I love it!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm still doing some EPP in the evenings. My jewel flower project is coming along.... I arranged all the pieces on the floor on October 1st and took a pic so that I would know how I wanted all the hexagon blocked placed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHfkPoCqBZhDfPxv6Zt241jiGYcgCpxGf1QmAH6F5Av1zTo6_WQ2sk8OMmjxGR_ts1ZJxUFi2VN-FTxPbZr4HIGPcXVJ6_7jtNp4Vw865ASkYaL9lEsNUomdiXn2uzZq5cLeaVw51eqAjC/s1600/DSCN1306.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHfkPoCqBZhDfPxv6Zt241jiGYcgCpxGf1QmAH6F5Av1zTo6_WQ2sk8OMmjxGR_ts1ZJxUFi2VN-FTxPbZr4HIGPcXVJ6_7jtNp4Vw865ASkYaL9lEsNUomdiXn2uzZq5cLeaVw51eqAjC/s640/DSCN1306.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Almost half of the hexagons are pieced together...the project is moving along quickly now so I have to plan on how to deal with the borders. My plan is to EPP in some half 4" diamonds on the top and bottom in colors similar to the blocks on the borders. I also intend to make some "half hexagons" to fit in on the sides. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhljNuotfW6XLNmKcVrgJ8pgejf0MC5G_Eh2cNEi6x8RElSz0ASPfhXm1Poye-_RtETSpJacXuemAsN-aXxohssV_-wO1TvxeAjRasug-0PwlhCZhB442aBrqbMaMzl2EBVoij9GFH8vOTC/s1600/DSCN1370.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhljNuotfW6XLNmKcVrgJ8pgejf0MC5G_Eh2cNEi6x8RElSz0ASPfhXm1Poye-_RtETSpJacXuemAsN-aXxohssV_-wO1TvxeAjRasug-0PwlhCZhB442aBrqbMaMzl2EBVoij9GFH8vOTC/s640/DSCN1370.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I really do love the process of EPP. Everyone who EPPs knows what I'm talking about...and if you haven't given it a try, watch a few videos and get a few tips from the experts--you won't regret it!<br />
<br />

When Amy Butler's Soul Blossoms fabric line originally came out, I didn't realize how awesome it was. Several years later I saw a few quilts online made from Soul Blossoms fabric and managed to find a yard of each of the prints in the collection. I've been hoarding them for years, only making an occasional quilt or bag from them. I knew that my new Gypsy pattern would be perfect for this beautiful fabric....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is an up-close, sexy shot of the quilting...The panto is called Jessie's Swirls and I love the texture it gave this quilt. The background fabric is Kona Stone, if I recall....</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rebecca will be binding it this week and (hopefully) some cover pictures can be taken at my Mom's house. She has a gate on the front of the house that might just look fantastic with this quilt hanging on it...If not, she has a park right up from her house--maybe there is a nice spot there to take a pic.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Anyhow, that about sums up what I did this week. I really would have had this quilted during August, but I didn't like the background fabric and had to re-order some new fabric (and unload the quilt from the longarm frame, etc) because I was just going to "go with it" even though the first fabric wasn't right. I'm very glad that I waited because this turned out so much better with the new backing.<br />
<br />
Did I ever show a pic of the bag I made with some of my coveted Soul Blossoms? It is called the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/220581825/tessa-basket-pdf-pattern">Tessa Bag</a> and I love it...wait, I haven't ever used it because I love it so much, but someday I will!!<br />

I'm down to about 8 more months before retirement...I can't wait! I'm short about 6 more hexagon blocks and the 8 half blocks for the sides, but I'm getting there... Most of the fabric was from the Summerfest line of fabric (with a few of my own added in for variety). I still love precuts!!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And an up-close, sexy shot. These are 2" diamonds, 2" jewels, and 1" hexagons. I really love this EPP and could happily do it for life!</div>

I need to quilt a top for a pattern I wrote up this summer...maybe that is my weekend job?? I'll take a pic as I'm moving through it...School is off to a start and I only have about 270 days until retirement. I'm just getting through each day and waiting for my new life to begin!! ;-)<br />
<br />
Happy quilting!Vic H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00731457735125526759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1369652289250863914.post-77692980570222980902016-08-18T08:46:00.001-07:002016-08-18T08:46:38.249-07:00Another Binary Code Mini Quilt....I just love binary code quilts. Remember when I did<a href="http://zanyquilter.blogspot.com/2012/03/binary-code-mancave-quilt.html"> this one</a>, for my son Ryan?? It spells Ryan ###### (our last name) in binary code vertically. We think it is kind of cool that it just looks like a random pattern of blocks to most people, but it really means something to us. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaxkTIyThFzwcQxnFvJE1p7dOJ5WlMQTW43St9IL46i5IzJLbbIVcF03Q7j6rf7GRR7ZY5_3ekMlf75QZLDfQggy_WFUBNGlCsuR8AwtWf9oiGcna3grq1cUNLSlXSBCZ24cUZdSSNa_PI/s1600/IMG_1001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaxkTIyThFzwcQxnFvJE1p7dOJ5WlMQTW43St9IL46i5IzJLbbIVcF03Q7j6rf7GRR7ZY5_3ekMlf75QZLDfQggy_WFUBNGlCsuR8AwtWf9oiGcna3grq1cUNLSlXSBCZ24cUZdSSNa_PI/s640/IMG_1001.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
In light of that successful quilt, I figured I'd make another mini one for myself. Each zero or one block will finish at 3" x 3". There are eight zeros and ones in each letter (horizontally) so it will measure 24" across and 30" down (there are 9 letters and one space in the words). Here is a link to a <a href="http://www.unit-conversion.info/texttools/convert-text-to-binary/">binary code converter</a> if you are interested in doing this yourself.... These are some zero blocks and some one blocks that I'm making from my huge stash of vintage shirts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUdzyto-7hBs3bJCU8fUYXKzmereeLOgO1inWWD2SyZEglC7fBicxl1u5lfM2HfE5_2KZG9u6FHOT1abNS2d2T9BkPMII1xcm53Pd6TqCPklRq5ySnZckq7H3S3WhhWa_xaf3lAOhhyphenhyphen3lQ/s1600/DSCN1264.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUdzyto-7hBs3bJCU8fUYXKzmereeLOgO1inWWD2SyZEglC7fBicxl1u5lfM2HfE5_2KZG9u6FHOT1abNS2d2T9BkPMII1xcm53Pd6TqCPklRq5ySnZckq7H3S3WhhWa_xaf3lAOhhyphenhyphen3lQ/s640/DSCN1264.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The left side shows a zero block. Two 1.5" x 3.5" strips on the sides, and three 1.5" x 1.5" squares up the middle. The right side shows a one block--all three strips are 1.5" x 3.5". Unfinished they will square up to 3.5" x 3.5". Easy peasy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2fkmzBqeYC2u51kxrKDMYLg7rbmN-hzs86qoi_SsTGTwOU5VLI_pc0Ocv8VO3f1HNW40HKcuDeRltW1PAhZLyAzHNiD2Uy8wIT2wGKMqyREkHdR33ZlmftWowxbmbKVgjOr-BhzkczPhF/s1600/DSCN1266.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2fkmzBqeYC2u51kxrKDMYLg7rbmN-hzs86qoi_SsTGTwOU5VLI_pc0Ocv8VO3f1HNW40HKcuDeRltW1PAhZLyAzHNiD2Uy8wIT2wGKMqyREkHdR33ZlmftWowxbmbKVgjOr-BhzkczPhF/s640/DSCN1266.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This will show how it is starting out...you are looking at a "z" and "e". ;-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbZtkOS7P6QDXip3em8tzpdLjFr7uoBifW4W13R5Cxe4rQP7yIUSvCBMc69QeWNAqmeCmsGgL6RQDcme2wq08UUTPRv1dRE9avUo33h8flNAYG7p_3nyJr5x3Lz9y3PqB-jOavbWzx5_Oz/s1600/DSCN1265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbZtkOS7P6QDXip3em8tzpdLjFr7uoBifW4W13R5Cxe4rQP7yIUSvCBMc69QeWNAqmeCmsGgL6RQDcme2wq08UUTPRv1dRE9avUo33h8flNAYG7p_3nyJr5x3Lz9y3PqB-jOavbWzx5_Oz/s640/DSCN1265.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Well, I guess we'll see how it all turns out in the end. It is my daily project while I binge watch Breaking Bad for the third time!! Ryan is at band camp during the day, and Rebecca is back to work, so I'm a housewife (sort of). I should wrap this up by next week when I have to return to school.<br />
<br />
I'll keep you up to date...Happy Quilting!Vic H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00731457735125526759noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1369652289250863914.post-26394987094968901042016-08-15T11:53:00.000-07:002016-08-15T11:53:08.587-07:00Still working...on a new pattern!A big HELLO to anyone who made the switch from the old blog! Thanks for following me...<br />
<br />
One of my last posts showed a new quilt pattern I was working on called Gypsy. Here it is done in pastels...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6fPW0IpvgwYMlmHgZSozUNqDucXGWFYX1FELEi6NApcdLZ03JLLtOS0LUgu0ZXAxjgd_enXeDiWXDT-xpxtFQyliwRizL_FYvzb0Dkv8vo0Q8zEGXEvmks8-rTNDIQtZUvZNtQ3z6nV7b/s1600/DSCN1220.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6fPW0IpvgwYMlmHgZSozUNqDucXGWFYX1FELEi6NApcdLZ03JLLtOS0LUgu0ZXAxjgd_enXeDiWXDT-xpxtFQyliwRizL_FYvzb0Dkv8vo0Q8zEGXEvmks8-rTNDIQtZUvZNtQ3z6nV7b/s640/DSCN1220.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But I really wanted a different cover pic so I remade the quilt in Amy Butler Soul Blossoms. Yes, I've been hoarding a bunch of this fabric and I thought it would make the perfect cover quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisx2etoDTpnybAiowgRE666LQrl3hzKJap-t-AJ0HEJQiVMdcN4cAw40p4XRoz39jMPCLUElcNl4RlvY-yPEMLCIv5-dTFQLGPQkkwyTsZM-Yg4ADH1j8pFzMIQ_1DEffZZBVhvLNhrzUF/s1600/DSCN1262.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisx2etoDTpnybAiowgRE666LQrl3hzKJap-t-AJ0HEJQiVMdcN4cAw40p4XRoz39jMPCLUElcNl4RlvY-yPEMLCIv5-dTFQLGPQkkwyTsZM-Yg4ADH1j8pFzMIQ_1DEffZZBVhvLNhrzUF/s640/DSCN1262.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
It still needs to be quilted, but this what I've been doing this summer. Not that it took me that long, lol, but I was working slowly. The pattern is written and just needs the cover pic to be completed. More to come on that soon, hopefully!<br />
<br />
I'm back to school next week...the final year!! Good luck to all you parents out there--school shopping awaits you!! Happy Quilting!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfZsalVmK5m3VV-sVLlrP9xdkkBsRC_jOvR5aMHuLUGvSwjdS0AT5JPXRhu-j3AMLr5kxV1FOGsNHqU3RMZ71bQTDbk3BPGYzx0digFwdNuSuGOSBldPkd-kKBLpWNhlealzS_oHhL_AfK/s1600/Sweet+Home+Alabama+cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfZsalVmK5m3VV-sVLlrP9xdkkBsRC_jOvR5aMHuLUGvSwjdS0AT5JPXRhu-j3AMLr5kxV1FOGsNHqU3RMZ71bQTDbk3BPGYzx0digFwdNuSuGOSBldPkd-kKBLpWNhlealzS_oHhL_AfK/s640/Sweet+Home+Alabama+cover.jpg" width="363" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt uses jelly roll strips, though instructions are given for cutting from leftover scrap pieces. Here is the back of the quilt pattern....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLzgSPAV_ag7bQG2Ok9jA7uwPqvMJQVTnJUcgNxR4V8_w4l_L9Cikt1RlmTNN-ld_vds-Ak6jtryRFhJGPlRpHitGjc4SglcyY5Odv6uub8WtHp_lWMBNdFjLG7IOsmLgYtOVjnm1-OvBQ/s1600/Sweet+Home+Alabama+pattern+back.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLzgSPAV_ag7bQG2Ok9jA7uwPqvMJQVTnJUcgNxR4V8_w4l_L9Cikt1RlmTNN-ld_vds-Ak6jtryRFhJGPlRpHitGjc4SglcyY5Odv6uub8WtHp_lWMBNdFjLG7IOsmLgYtOVjnm1-OvBQ/s640/Sweet+Home+Alabama+pattern+back.png" width="412" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The alternate sizes vary from baby to twin size. This quilt is perfect for beginners as it has no tricky piecing....just straight lines all the way!! I definitely advise using a strongly contrasting color for the cornerstones. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXAxTp15uFOD9KERsbV6fPDF9UNhnrNwhLFXqtla2-tnHbrQANwLQS443201y8SYlokYp9aspEMbH0epzKI5SInE4wTNinX74HKrS7bPY2h2hAeiaxs4Ub_18K4tyCK8d7XiFxRiX2JrJ6/s1600/DSCN1047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="590" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXAxTp15uFOD9KERsbV6fPDF9UNhnrNwhLFXqtla2-tnHbrQANwLQS443201y8SYlokYp9aspEMbH0epzKI5SInE4wTNinX74HKrS7bPY2h2hAeiaxs4Ub_18K4tyCK8d7XiFxRiX2JrJ6/s640/DSCN1047.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I quilted it using a new panto called Shasta. I love the swirling daisies and whimsical leaves. It is a lovely quilt and was quite easy to make. The pattern is available for PDF download on <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/270927209/sweet-home-alabama-a-25-strip-friendly">Etsy here</a>, or <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/home-decor/sweet-home-alabama/195284">Craftsy here.</a><br />
<br />
I've got another quilt in the works so keep checking back in with me...<br />
<br />
